Naval Shipyard Mare Island
One of the oldest naval bases in the nation, Naval Shipyard Mare Island is on the national register of historic sites. Mare Island is now being converted to civilian use but the historic naval base is being preserved. The dry docks, cranes, mansions, chapel and cemetery will be open for public visitation and make for a dramatic location to berth U.S.S. Iowa.
